Amaziah said to Amos, “O seer, go, flee away to the land of Judah, earn your bread there, and prophesy there; but never again prophesy at Bethel, for it is the king’s sanctuary, and it is a temple of the kingdom.”
Then Amos answered Amaziah, “I am no prophet, nor a prophet’s son; but I am a herdsman, and a dresser of sycamore trees, and the Lord took me from following the flock, and the Lord said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’
Let me hear what God the Lord will speak,
for he will speak peace to his people,
to his faithful, to those who turn to him in their hearts.
Surely his salvation is at hand for those who fear him,
that his glory may dwell in our land.
Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet;
righteousness and peace will kiss each other.
Faithfulness will spring up from the ground,
and righteousness will look down from the sky.
The Lord will give what is good,
and our land will yield its increase.
Righteousness will go before him,
and will make a path for his steps.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love. He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and insight he has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory.
He called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics. He said to them, “Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. If any place will not welcome you and they refuse to hear you, as you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.” So they went out and proclaimed that all should repent. They cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.
If you can imagine going on a trip, arriving at the airport to discover that your flight has been cancelled, your luggage is lost and your wallet has been stolen, you might get a sense of how it could have felt to be a disciple going out on the mission. You have to journey on foot and wherever you go, you have to tell strangers that they need to repent of their sins.
You know that there is a good chance that people will not want to hear you or take you in. So you take inventory of what you have in your favor. What you have is almost completely spiritual. What is most important is the focus on the spiritual: God’s Will, blessings, grace, redemption, forgiveness, peace, wisdom, insight, hope, faith, truth, counsel, praise…which is power in the Holy Spirit. The power gives authority over the devil. Then as far as the human nature, you possess the power to heal the sick. You also have a partner who accompanies you. You are not alone and you have him for testimony, for company, and to pray in agreement with you for God’s Will to be done.
As we get bogged down with the baggage of this life, it is good to stop and focus on what is absolutely essential to have with us. We must have confidence in God’s love and in His Will. We must believe that He will provide for our needs. We must realize our need for God and our authority over the evil one. We must find prayer partners who will share with us their gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I ask for you to enlighten my mind with what I really need to ready myself for my journey to You. I need people to share the gospel with, I need to show your love to others and your power over evil. Grant me faith, hope and love to pray in your Will and to see your Kingdom power in the world. Amen
